For all of our dog-loving readers out there, this weekend’s event at Cobo Hall is one that you won’t want to miss.
The Detroit Kennel Club is hosting its 106th and 107th annual Dog Shows this Saturday and Sunday. Each day judging will begin at 8:30 AM and the breeds will be on exhibit from 9AM till 5PM. According to the Detroit Kennel Club’s website the best time to visit will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Tickets for the show will run you $15 for an adult, $8 for children under 12 and $8 for seniors. Children under two are free and Family Packs (two adult tickets and three children tickets) are $40. Pick up a Detroit News or Free Press newspaper today for a $5 off coupon on Family Packs.
Over 2,500 dogs will be at the event representing over 150 breeds. All breeds are recognized by the American Kennel Club.
The Dog Shows are unique because of what they offer. Per the press release from the DKC:
The DKC shows are ‘benched shows’, which offer visitors the unique opportunity to meet with owners and breeders and learn about breed characteristics, temperament, care, health, grooming, history and other issues for dog owners. When dogs are not in the judging rings, they are required by the rules of the show to be displayed on a bench according to breed, making it easy for spectators to talk to several breeders of a specific dog in the same location. The DKC Dog Shows are one of only five benched American Kennel Club (AKC) shows left in the United States (Chicago, Detroit, New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco).
“So few people have access to a benched show and we have one right here in Michigan,” added Bergishagen. “We encourage people to come to the shows to meet breeders dedicated to proper breeding practices and wait for the right dog instead of making an impulsive purchase of a puppy at a pet store or online. Many reputable breeders are cutting back on litters because they will only breed if they believe they can find good homes for their puppies. The shows offer an excellent opportunity for breeders and consumers to connect.”
The Kennel Club will be offering several “Meet The Breed Seminars” throughout the weekend. The schedule to date is the following:
