Just Baked announces new Detroit location

By Jeffrey Buck

For those of you who work in downtown Detroit, Valentine’s Day 2013 just got a lot less hectic. A goal set by Dan Gilbert to bring more than just tech companies downtown is becoming a reality. Just Baked, the specialty cupcake and bakery chain, announced it will open its first Detroit location in the Dime Building.

You may remember that the Dime Building was purchased last year by none other than Gilbert’s Rock Ventures, LLC. The beautiful masterpiece by famed architect Daniel Burnham built in 1912 features 23 floors and over 350,000 square feet of office space. Just Baked plans to occupy a portion of the first-floor, in a space once home to a coffee shop, by the end of the month after Rock Ventures courted them.

Rock Ventures has created a ton of buzz in Detroit with the acquisition of nine buildings in one year’s time. They now own over two million square feet in downtown. It’s their hope to continue to find and help more business looking to impact Detroit’s future.

“We are happy to have Just Baked join us downtown and help continue the momentum we’ve gained since moving our Family of Companies to the city,” said Matt Cullen, CEO of Rock Ventures. “Other businesses are realizing that it is an exciting time to be in the city and are following suit, relocating to vibrant, energetic downtown Detroit.”

Just Baked is no stranger to the area with 12 locations throughout Southeastern Michigan. Known for their fresh gourmet “jumbo” cupcakes, the shop hopes to sell thousands of cupcakes a month out of the new location. The new shop will also add three full-time jobs and a few part-time staff at the store. Opening the shop in Detroit has been a goal of founder, Pam Turkin.

“It has always been a goal of mine to open a Just Baked in downtown Detroit,” said Pam Turkin, Founder and Owner of Just Baked. “We feel it is the perfect time to join the renaissance of the City that I grew up in. I look forward to serving all of the devoted companies and residents that call Detroit home.”

Hours of operation will be Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m., and weekends during major events. The store will offer same-day delivery of its cupcakes through a partnership with Suburban Delivery.
