Shorpy Saturday – Work Zone: 1914

By Jeffrey Buck

There was a time in Detroit when transit did not rest solely on the automobile. Here is an excellent photograph of a street from a period in time when people could say, “I’m taking the trolley downtown.”

Take a look at the photograph entitled “Work Zone: 1914“:

Detroit circa 1914. “Construction work — grade separation from Buchanan Street.” The interesting bits here are all in the distance, including a cameo by the monolith from “2001.” Detroit Publishing glass negative.
