I always imagine what it must have been like to shop downtown Detroit in its heyday around the Holidays. I’ve seen photos of window displays at Hudson’s and while studying in Europe got to see some great interactive and moving displays. Indoor mall shopping isn’t anything magical but with the recent success of pop-up shops downtown I hope to see a vibrant shopping experience downtown soon!

Take a look at the photograph entitled “Pardridge & Blackwell: 1915“:Detroit, Michigan, circa 1915. “Pardridge & Blackwell department store.” Many interesting details lurking in the corners here; note the phantom streetcar on the left and billboard advertising “Death-Daring Drivers” in a 24-hour auto race on the right. 8×10 inch glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company.
