On Your Mark … Get Set … Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – Thousands of runners and walkers will lace up their running shoes and head over to the Detroit Zoo on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, for the 19th annual Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo. Proceeds from the event benefit the Ruth Roby Glancy Animal Health Complex and veterinary care for the Zoo’s animals.

The event includes a 5K run, 10K run, Too Wild! 5K + 10K combo and noncompetitive 1.5-mile fun walk. Runners in the 5K and 10K events will start at the Zoo’s 10 Mile Road entrance and wind through the scenic streets of Huntington Woods surrounding the Zoo. Walkers will follow a course past award-winning animal habitats as they stroll through Zoo grounds.

Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo begins with the 5K run at 8 a.m., followed by the 10K run at 9 a.m. and the untimed fun walk at 9:15 a.m. Online registration is available at www.detroitzoo.org/runwild until 6 a.m. Sept. 11, and registration will also be available at the Zoo on Sept. 11, 12 and 13. Participants who register by Aug. 14 receive $5 off their registration fee.

New this year, family and friends can sponsor Run Wild participants by making a donation at http://www.crowdrise.com/RunWildfortheDetroitZoo.

Medals will be presented to the top two male and female finishers in each age category. All participants will receive a commemorative T-shirt as well as free admission to the Zoo on race day. Regular Zoo admission applies for non-race participants.

A post-race party sponsored by Kroger will follow the Run Wild event with live music, family entertainment, and complimentary food and beverages.

Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo has been recognized as a quality physical activity event by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness. The Governor’s Council endorses local, regional and state events to acknowledge an organization’s ability to plan and carry out a quality event that significantly contributes to the health and well-being of Michigan residents.

Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo is supported by Ford Motor Company, Genisys Credit Union, Kroger, Moosejaw, Pepsi and Tim Hortons.

Are you still thinking about participating in this year’s Run Wild for the Detroit Zoo? You have until Friday, August 15th to take advantage of the current fees before they increase by $5 each. There are four different events being offered this year and include:

Fun Walk: $20 | $25

5K Race: $25 | $30

10K Race: $30 | $35

5K & 10K Combo: $50 | $55

This family-friendly event is offered to all ages. Participants receive free admission to the zoo for the day, a commemorative t-shirt and a post-race party that includes food and drinks. The Fun Walk follows a 1.5 mile path through the Detroit Zoo. The 5K & 10K races begin at the 10 Mile entrance of the zoo and then follow a course through the City of Huntington Woods ending back at the zoo.

Race day is Sunday, September 14th!

Mariner’s Inn to host River Rhythm Fundraiser Nov. 8

DETROIT – Mariners Inn will host its 25th annual River Rhythm gala fundraiser at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center.

Detroit Tigers special assistant and 1968 World Series champion Willie Horton will serve as keynote speaker for the event. The evening will feature a VIP reception with Willie Horton, a plated dinner, silent and live auctions, an award ceremony and entertainment.

The theme of this year’s black-tie 25th anniversary event is “Silver Linings of Recovery,” celebrating the self-worth, dignity and hope Mariners Inn provides to those struggling with addiction.

Monies raised by River Rhythm support Mariners Inn services, with 92 cents per dollar directly benefiting programming. Last year Mariners Inn provided vital recovery services to more than 600 homeless men, as well as family and youth outreach services focused on family reunification to nearly 170 individuals.

“River Rhythm is an opportunity for us to honor the individuals and generous donors who have supported our mission and made possible the continued expansion of our services, which now includes at-risk youth and young adults,” said David Sampson, chief executive officer of Mariners Inn.

Sunset at the Zoo

On the shore of Lake Michigan. From atop the Renaissance Center. On a sand dune in Traverse City. Michigan is home to many fantastic spots to witness a spectacular sunset but come Friday, June 22 the Detroit Zoo will be the only place you’ll want to watch the sun go down.

The 21-and-over gala, held rain or shine, presented by Strategic Staffing Solutions known as Sunset at the Zoo will offer a strolling supper with tastes of signature dishes from over 30 of the area’s finest restaurants capped off with desserts and zoo-themed specialty drinks. While strolling through the zoo after hours the event will include live entertainment, dancing, live & silent auctions and access to the animal habitats. Attire for the evening is “summer chic”.
